Mayor Giuseppe Cossari and Miss Hiromi Shimizu of Japanese Local Government Delegation

On the 14th of June I attended the National Assembly of Local Government on the topic of Population ,Participation ,Productivity the Conference was held in Canberra where some 500 mayors from all over Australia participated, The Prime Minister addressed the assemble talking about the future of local Government, the Labour Government has initiated Australian Council of Local Government, where Australian Government Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries will take open questions from the floor. An excellent initiative as Australian Mayors can openly ask various Ministers , obviously questions relating to local Government issues, on this occasion the Minister for Local Government Anthony Albanese announced another round of grants amounting to one hundred million dollars giving the opportunity for Councils to apply for funding for new projects. The government also announce an amount of two hundred and fifty thousand to be used to inform Australians of the need for Councils to be included in the Constitutions ,as currently Municipalities come under State and Territory Governments. At the Conference I had the pleasure of meeting and discuss similar issues with the Japanese Local Government delegation , some of our discussion touched on Italy as Miss Hiromi Shimizu had visited Italy and was quite Knowledgeable of Italian History , it’s such a small world an Italian meets Japanese in Australia Talking about Japan and Italy , I look forward to continue this relationship between the three countries, perhaps someday soon a sister city relationship between could be possible between Knox and Hiroshima , I hope to visit the land of Rising Sun in the Near Future and see firsthand how local government functions in Japan.

Joe Cossari Urges Young People to Vote in Comites

It is vital, if we are to retain all that is good in our Italian Culture, that we involve our new generations in the Comites and the work that it does. I urge all eligible young Italian-Australians to learn more about the Comites and use their vote wisely.
